St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Chelsea

Built in 1831, St. Peter’s hails from indeed another time. Its severe English Gothic Revival cannot be called Victorian, since at the time the aforementioned monarch was just a teenager. While the appearance may be stern, almost Roman, the interior is far more welcome.

“Some of these stain windows are Tiffany’s,” said one of the attendants while he busily cleaned the inside.

At the time it was built, Chelsea was the name of the estate Clement Clarke Moore inhabited and slowly donated, like a good Episcopal community leader, to the church. While the parish pales in scale to the General Theological Seminary, the visitor can see the signs of a very prosperous church, with its beautiful altar and yes, some stained glass windows from Tiffany’s.

However, the parish is now seeing a less prosperous time, as the cracks in the paint can attest. But it is still a sublime one.
