Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, East New York

Some churches look out of place due to changing demographics or neighborhood dynamics, but others are so otherworldly that transcend those observations.

We at the NYCCP have a weakness for Byzantine and Orthodox architecture, and this beautiful parish, with its quite voluminous green onion domes, is no exception. It is on the corner (almost) of Pennsylvania Avenue and Glenmore Avenue.

Completed in 1936, it stands proudly in the corner, almost oblivious to the blocks around it.

After observing the church from the outside many times, we recently got a chance to see its interior. We were flabbergasted by its frescoes and dome, but also by its sheer verticality, By this, we’re trying to say Holy Trinity appears to be deceivingly small inside. But still, smallish and all, it has the beauty of a Fabergé egg.
