Church Of Christ (Temple Adath Israel)

There is a cottage industry on the former synagogues of the Bronx, almost a hundred. Many of those buildings have disappeared, others sit empty, but a majority of them have been repurposed for the Christian faith.

That’s the case with the former Temple Adath Israel, 551 E. 169th St., in Morrisania. This is the oldest building constructed as a synagogue in the Bronx, built right after the congregation bought the lot occupied by the former St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Eventually, the congregation moved to the Grand Concourse, and this beautiful Moorish Revival building is one of the many left in its wake,
